The EPA recommends that everyone with a private well have water testing annually for the following items: Total Coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates, and nitrites. These parameters make up the standard water test.
During the inspection, water samples are taken and then analyzed by a state certified laboratory. Some mortgages such as FHA, VA, or rural development require that the water be tested for lead in addition to the standard test. The water can also be tested for arsenic, other heavy metals, and volatile organic chemicals upon request for an additional fee.
